Steel pipe tee is a traditional branch connection fitting that can provide three branches for changing fluid direction in the industrial pipeline system. The diverse functions make it more prevalent in pipe fittings. There are two types that Equal Tee ( Straight Tee) and Reducing Tee ( Reducer Tee).
How to Classify the Steel Pipe Tee
According to the shapes, there are two types.
- Equal Tee
- Reducing Tee
According to the connection, there are three types.
- Butt Weld Tee
- Socket Weld Tee
- Threaded Tee
According to the material grade, there are six types.
- Carbon Steel Pipe Tee
- Copper Nickel Tee
- Alloy Steel Tee
- Nickel Alloy Tee
- Stainless Steel Tee
- Duplex Steel Tee
Equal Tee vs Reducing Tee
Stainless Steel Equal Tee
We also call it as straight tee, because three branches are in same size. While the customer always describe stainless steel equal tee as below.
EQUAL TEE 6″ SCH40 BW ASTM A403 WP316 ASME B16.9
Carbon Steel Reducing Tee
Usually the branch diameter is smaller than run pipe diameter. When you buy it, you can describe low temp carbon steel reducing tee as below.
TEE REDUCING 3″ X 2″ BW SCH80 X SCH80 ASTM A420-WPL6 ASME B16.9
Connection Types of Steel Pipe Tee
Butt Weld Tee
It is widely used in petroleum, Oil & gas industry, Chemical industry, Marine industry, Pipeline engineering and Power industry.
When the thickness is below 3mm, the ends of butt weld fittings will be in plain, otherwise the ends should be beveled. The size in NPS (DN) has large range and thickness in schedule.

Socket Weld Tee
We call it as a kind of high pressure pipe fitting. The pressure rating is 3000lb, 6000lb and 9000lb.
It is a pipe connection method for inserting pipe into valve, pipe fittings and flange. It is usually used for 4 inch or below.

Threaded Tee
It is manufacturing by forging process, and formed by heating forging with ingots or round bars, then turning on a lathe to process threads.
The thread type is usually NPT, PT, FNPT, BSPP and BSPT.
